Xgeva may be prescribed to prevent bone fractures in people who have cancer that has spread to their bones. It is also sometimes used to treat giant cell tumor of the bone when surgery is not an option or to treat high blood calcium levels when other medications have been unsuccessful. It is not used to treat people with bone marrow cancer.
Xgeva may cause nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite, diarrhea, constipation, a feeling of weakness, back pain, headache, or pain or swelling in your limbs. If any of these side effects persist or become severe, contact your doctor. Call your doctor right away if you experience severe lightheadedness, a rapid or slow heart rate, difficulty concentrating, muscle tightness, difficulty breathing, unusual pain in your hip, thigh, or groin; or a tingling feeling around your mouth or in your fingers or toes.
Because Xgeva is a highly-specialized drug, it doesn’t have a generic equivalent. Prolia is the only other medication that contains the same active ingredient as Xgeva (denosumab). However, Prolia is prescribed for different reasons (primarily to treat osteoporosis in women after menopause).
