Tirosint is a replacement hormone therapy most often used to treat symptoms of hyperthyroidism, including depression, excessive tiredness and lack of energy, slow speech, joint and muscle pain, hair loss, thick skin, increased sensitivity to cold, weight gain, constipation, and (in children) decreased growth. It is also used to prevent gout and to assist the body when a patient has thyroid cancer or is going through certain surgeries or cancer treatments that affect the thyroid.
The only known common side effect is slight hair loss. Some side effects can be serious and require immediate medical attention, including: allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, hives, swelling in the face and lips, swelling in the tongue or throat), insomnia, changes in appetite or weight, fever, fast or irregular heart rate, hot flashes, unusual sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, and changes in your menstrual period.
While the generic form of Tirosint is not available in U.S. pharmacies, there are several other brand name medication that use levothyroxine as their key ingredient. These include Unithroid, Synthroid, Levoxyl, and Levothroid.
