Ocella contains ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen) and drospirenone (a progestin). These two female hormones work together to prevent ovulation, thicken cervical mucus, and change the lining of the uterus, which helps to prevent pregnancy. This medication may also be used to make periods more regular, treat acne, and decrease the risk for ovarian cysts.
The hormones in Ocella may cause certain side effects, including mild nausea, bloating, breast tenderness, or weight gain. You may also experience light bleeding between periods during the first few months of use. Contact your doctor if you have any side effects that last a long time or become severe. Call your doctor immediately if you have any unlikely but serious side effects, including sudden heavy vaginal bleeding, swelling in your hands or feet, new or worsening migraines, symptoms of depression, a breast lump, severe abdominal pain, dark urine, or jaundice.
