Maxalt helps relieve migraine headaches and other common migraine symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light. Migraines are believed to be caused by the dilation of blood vessels in the brain, and Maxalt works by causing these blood vessels to narrow. It is most effective when taken at the first sign of a migraine. It will not prevent a migraine from occurring in the first place, nor will it reduce the frequency of your migraine attacks.
Maxalt may cause dizziness, drowsiness, warm or tingling skin, or a mild non-migraine headache. If you have any of these side effects and they last a long time or become severe, tell your doctor. Contact your doctor immediately if you have any rare but serious side effects, including unusual mood changes, cold hands or feet, discoloration of your fingers or toes, or changes in hearing. Get emergency medical attention if you experience pain in your chest, jaw, neck, abdomen, or arm; weakness on one side of your body; an irregular heart rate; slurred speech; confusion; bloody diarrhea; changes in urination; muscle twitching; higher fever; or loss of coordination.
