Keppra is indicated to treat juvenile myoclonic epilepsy and idiopathic generalized epilepsy. It can help reduce partial-onset, myoclonic and tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures.
Keppra can cause side effects. Some possible moderate side effects include dizziness and drowsiness. These side effects should decrease over time as your body adjusts to the medication. Tell your doctor if these side effects are severe or don’t go away. Serious side effects that you should report to your doctor immediately include: loss of coordination, negative mood changes, suicidal thoughts, behavioral changes and worsening seizures.
The generic name for Keppra is levetiracetam, which is considerably cheaper. The only brand names are Keppra and Keppra XR. Similar drugs include Dilantin (phenytoin), Topamax (topiramate), and Lamictal (lamotrigine). However, not all of them treat all the same types of seizures as Keppra.
