Brisdelle is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that treats and prevents moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms (hot flashes) associated with menopause. It is not an antidepressant and isn't a type of hormone therapy. It works by increasing the amount of a naturally occurring neurochemical (serotonin). It may take up to four weeks to notice results. Do not stop taking this medication without talking to your doctor.

As an SSRI, there is a risk of developing suicidal thoughts in certain segments of women. Talk to your doctor about the risks, and let them know if you have depression or have previously attempted suicide. Common side effects include: abnormal dreams, changes in mood or behavior including depression, problems with concentration or memory, trouble sleeping, feeling unusually tired, altered sense of taste, changes in appetite, weight loss, throbbing headache, congestion or cold-like symptoms, heartburn, sour or upset stomach, increase in passing gas or belching, changes in sexual ability or appetite, itching especially near the genitals, vaginal discharge, irritation and itching or swelling in the eye or eyelid, tenderness around the eyes and cheekbones, and problems urinating. Some rarer side effects are severe and require immediate medical attention, including: allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, hives, swelling in the face or lips, swelling in the tongue or throat), seizures, agitation, confusion, feeling lightheaded and dizzy or as though you may faint, problems with speaking or coordination, mania (moving, talking, or feeling an excitement you cannot control), increased sensitivity to light, inability to move your eyes, unusual face or body movements especially if sudden or incomplete, decreased body movement, flu-like symptoms (fever with chills, sweating), chest pain or congestion, irregular or pounding heartbeat or pulse, muscle pain or weakness, rash especially in red or purple patches, dark urine, tingling or shock-like sensations.

The generic form of Brisdelle -- paroxetine -- is not available in low dosages, nor has any other brand name been approved for using low doses of paroxetine to treat hot flashes. However, there are a number of antidepressants that utilize higher doses of paroxetine, namely Paxil and Pexeva. Always be sure you get the medication that's been prescribed to you.
