As a selective serotonin receptor agonist, Axert treats migraines that have already started by narrowing blood vessels around the brain in order to prevent pain signals from being processed. It also prevents the release of certain natural substances responsible for common migraine symptoms, including sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, and throbbing headaches.
Common side effects include drowsiness or dizziness, mild non-migraine headache, dry mouth, numbness or tingling, a burning sensation, and nausea with or without vomiting. Some less common side effects can be severe and require immediate medical attention, including: allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, hives, swelling in the face or lips, swelling in the tongue or throat), dangerously high blood pressure (seizure, confusion, anxiety, severe headache with pounding in your neck or ears, blurred vision, shortness of breath, severe chest pain, nose bleed), hallucinations, agitation, unusual sweating, overactive reflexes, fever, fainting, loss of coordination, fast heart rate, chest pain or pressure spreading to your jaw or shoulder, numbness or tingling with pale discoloration in your fingers or toes, or persistent diarrhea.
